Shunde

Shunde is one of the five administrative districts of Foshan City, located in the south of Guangdong Province and the central plains of the Pearl River Delta. In 2009, it was granted direct administration under the Guangdong provincial government, thereby gaining autonomy over notable matters such as the district's economic development.

Shunde currently has jurisdiction over four subdistricts: Daliang, Rongui, Leilu, and Lunjiao; and six towns: Beijiao, Lecong, Jun'an, Xingtan, Chencun, and Longjiang.

Economy

Shunde's economy was once dominated by agriculture, fisheries, and silk farming. Following the reform-and-opening initiatives in 1978, the county gradually developed into an industrial metropolis and became one of the most affluent counties in China. The industrial landscape of Shunde comprise of home appliances, machinery and equipment, textiles and garments, chemicals, telecommunications, car accessories and components, household products, packaging and printing, and bio-medicine.

Above all others, Shunde is famed for its manufacturing of home appliances, ranking as the country’s biggest producer of air conditioners, refrigerators, rice cookers, and microwaves under nationally renowned brands such as Midea, Galanz, and Kelon.

Tourism

Shunde is easily accessible by train, bus, or ferry from Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangzhou. Popular attractions include Qinghui Garden, one of four renowned gardens in Guangdong, Bruce Lee Paradise Park, Mt. Shunfeng Park, and Baolin Temple.

Interesting Facts

In 2014, Shunde joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as one of two places in China to be awarded the "City of Gastronomy" title. Shunde has been widely regarded as the cradle of Cantonese cuisine, boasting exquisite ingredients and flavours through innovative cooking and preparation.

Shunde cuisine encompass many famous and special dishes, including the Double Skin Milk, a Shunde invention made of milk, egg white, and sugar. The skills used in making this dessert is listed as part of the Shunde Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Foshan is deeply immersed in the history of Kung Fu as it attracted many martial arts schools and produced notable Kung Fu masters such as Wong Fei Hung and Ip Man.

Shunde is also the hometown of famous martial artist and actor, Bruce Lee. His ancestral home is located in Shang Village in the town of Jun'an.
